Despite days of calls and worry, Charlotte made every effort to provide a stress free front that night. She got beer as well as two pizzas. During the weekend, between those calls and visits to Eothian's hospital bed, Charlotte's living room furniture arrived. A large sectional, plenty big enough for two tall people to stretch out on, and a real coffee table had been assembled. She hadn't bothered putting them where she wanted, so they sat at awkward angles to each other in the middle of the room.

There was a real dining table, though. Three chairs sat around the round table where she arranged the food. The table, at least, looked remarkably civilized. Of course, once the food was out, the relentless battle started with the kittens. Even after putting the pizza into the oven for safe keeping, the kittens weren't convinced. Charlotte had to stand in the kitchen watching the oven just in case one decided to pop in there.

With no clear idea when John would arrive, she started cursing under her breath. It took a fair bit of effort to make sure she didn't absently curse the neighbors with her muttering. The kittens, on the other hand, were fair game.

After they made their dinner date, John decided he needed a shower before he could go out in public. His attempts were unsuccessful, every time he tried to wash what hair he had left, he had to back off. In lieu of another headache, he opted for a quick, lukewarm bath.

He dressed more casually then she'd ever seen him, completing the outfit with a hat. He wasn't normally one for hats, but he wanted to cover the fact that the front half of his head had been shaven, only showing a few days of fresh growth.

Not trusting himself to drive, or even knowing where he was car, he took a cab to her place. After the driver was paid, he went to the front of the building and buzzed to be let in.

She had to catch a flying cat before she could press the lock release even though she used her mind to press it. With both kittens tucked firmly against her, she went to stand at the door and wait for him to come up. She was suddenly grateful they were being such brats. At least she wouldn't open the door looking worried. She'd look annoyed.

He greeted her with a weak smile, looking at the kittens. "Are they being pests?"

She held them up by their scruffs, one in each hand, and nodded. "Terrible pests. I've been considering letting them get themselves into the oven." The kittens both squirmed for a moment, then blinked out of sight, leaving her standing with her hands in the air.

She hung her head. "Please, come in, have a beer."

When they disappeared, he shuddered and closed his eyes, rubbing them for a moment. Then he gave her a smile and came the rest of the way into the apartment. He closed the door behind him and looked around, noticing the new furniture.

She followed him into the living area, coming up close behind him, and waved a hand at the furniture. "See what happens when you lose days? I do a half assed job of decorating."

She put her hand lightly on his lower back. "You should sit and I'll get the food."

He leaned back against her hand and smiled faintly. "Table or couch?" He turned slowly and faced her, reaching up to touch her face. "After we eat, we'll get your living room straightened out."

She closed her eyes and rubbed against his hand, groaning softly. "Table or I'll never let you eat." She had to force herself to pull away from him so she could get the pizzas. "We'll figure out after, after."

He kissed her forehead, then went to sit at the table. He was waiting for a kitten to appear and torment him. He just knew they were waiting.

He nodded and smiled against her lips as he pressed against her. His hips gently ground against hers, all his movements purposefully slow. "This is an extended period of time?"

She eased her legs apart, letting him press against even more sensitive places. Before answering, she nipped at him. "No. I don't count a week as an extended period. I do count it as too damn long, though." She moved her hands up his back, nails pressing hard. "I think, just maybe, you want me."

Smirking, he nodded. "No idea where you got that impression, but yes." He nudged her head back and nipped at her neck, hitting that same spot he'd been working at last time they were together.

She groaned thickly. "You leave another mark and I'm going to put one on you." She worked a hand between them, finding the bulge that indicated his excitement. That brought another low moan. "You should know some of your co-workers might already have questions about me, even without a mark."

He bucked against her hand and whimpered, then nipped more firmly at her neck before pulling away. "Make some phone calls, did you? I'm sure I'll be interrogated when I go back." He lifted his head a little. "What should I tell them?"

Given how little room there was between them, she cheated a little and used magic to help her get his zipper undone. "I made an embarrassing nuisance of myself calling random numbers at the local office." She slid her fingers inside his pants. "Well, I told them I was your girlfriend, but you're welcome to tell them whatever you like."

His eyes closed when he felt her hand, his body reacting. Feeling out of control of the situation for a moment, he felt the temperature dip and shivered. It only lasted a moment, then he was pressing against her hand. "Girlfriend. I haven't had one of those in a very long time."

"I've never had a boyfriend at all." She got her hand deeper into his pants, her fingers searching the outline of his cock. She wondered how low the temperature would drop if she added an invisible hand. "How long has it been for you?"

He groaned again, then closed his eyes. He really didn't have it in him to try right then, so he rubbed her back and held her hair off her neck and back.

She smiled at the considerate gesture, moving her kisses a little lower, then back up to his neck. She thought about just how easy it would be to get used to touching him. "When are you going back? You said a few days."

He nodded and kissed her hair. "Yes, a few days. Don't think I could handle the lights or the driving right now."

She moved off him with a groan, flopping onto her back beside him. Looking up at the ceiling, she tried to figure out how she felt. She was too wrapped up in the surface relief of finding him physically whole to really know.

"Where will you go?"

He looked over at her and shrugged. "Back to my hotel. Just turn off the lights and sleep, I guess."

She absently rubbed his belly for a while, able to feel his still rough breathing as she caressed him. Finally she sat up, pulled her legs up so she was crossed legged and spoke softly. "You could do that, but the thing about hotel rooms is they don't have kittens. Didn't like that about mine so I got some. Definitely better that way."

She exhaled slowly. "Might feel better with kittens."

He stared at her for a long few moments, just lightly rubbing her foot. "It's true. Hotels do not have kittens. And they especially don't have teleporting, pizza stealing kittens."

He went silent again, clearly thinking. Then he smiled and nodded. "I would miss the kitten. Which would not help with my recovery."

She put her hand on his, lifting it off her foot and holding it in her lap. "We can't have anything interfere with your recovery. Plenty of rest, kitten petting, and decent take out. All crucial elements."

Her voice was remarkably even given the panicked screaming in her mind.
